'Raoul' has TAG Awards eating out of its hand

"Eating Raoul," a campy Shelterbelt Theatre musical about reluctant sex workers who kill their clients and pocket their cash, topped the annual Theatre Arts Guild Awards on Sunday night, winning best musical and nine more awards.

"I Am My Own Wife," a SNAP Productions one-man drama about an East German transvestite who survives both the Nazi and Communist regimes, was close behind with seven wins, including best drama.

Combined, the two shows swept up more than half the 30 honors handed out at the Holiday Convention Centre. SNAP and Shelterbelt tied, at 10 awards each, as the most honored theaters for the 2006-07 season, which ended in late June.

The Bellevue Little Theatre won top comedy honors for "A Servant to Two Masters," plus three more awards for its musical "Lucky Stiff": supporting actress Allison Botkin Wissman, featured actor Dave Howard and youth technician Raymond Barnes. They were the only musical awards that did not go to the Shelterbelt show.

"Eating Raoul" was a winner for director Daena Schweiger, music director Nancy Curry, choreographer Patrick Roddy, the ensemble on "Hot Monkey Love" and costume designers Leslie Angeroth, Gary Bosanek and Kevin Steward.

Scott Fowler and Jennifer Gilg, as sex workers Paul and Mary Bland, and Tim Vallier, as their shady Latin landlord, Raoul, all won acting trophies, as did Denise Chevalier for featured bits in the "Raoul" chorus.

"I Am My Own Wife" won all seven categories for which it was nominated, including lead actor in a comedy or drama for Nick Zadina. Zadina played real-life transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf and nearly 40 additional roles.

Kevin Lawler, a co-founder of Omaha's Blue Barn Theatre who has since moved to New York, won best director of a comedy or drama, also for "Wife."

The show swept nearly all the technical categories: Bill Van Deest's scenic design, Homero Vela's lighting, Nancy Ross and Rhonda Hall's props, and Molly Welsh's sound.

The Circle Theater won best one-act play for its comedy "Laundry and Bourbon," about three Southern women who let down their hair on a boozy back-porch afternoon.

Mary Carrick, who played a suicidal woman in BroadStreet Theatre Co.'s " 'night, Mother," won best actress in a drama or comedy. Sherry Fletcher won supporting actress honors for BroadStreet's comedy about menopause, "Hot Flashes."

The Omaha Community Playhouse, which had been the most nominated theater with 36 nods, won two awards: youth actress Caroline Iliff for "Peter Pan" and youth actor Joey Galda for "Kimberly Akimbo."
