"The International Stud" premiered
in 1978. A second, more complex work, "Fugue in a Nursery," opened in 1979, also
Off Broadway. In the same year; the very ambitious "Widows and Children First"
opened, and was named Best Play of 1979 by the critics of the Soho Weekly News.
On June 10,1982, all three plays were moved to
Broadway for an evening called Torch Song Trilogy and history was made. Harvey Fierstein
became an overnight celebrity and Torch Song began playing to sold-out houses. Critics
raved and audiences have been laughing and crying every night since. Torch Song Trilogy
has brought its writer and star, Harvey Fierstein, Tony Awards for Best Play and Best
Actor in 1983. The most important and successful gay play since Boys in the Band, Torch
Song Trilogy is hilarious, brilliant and moving in its surprising universality.
